The computers behind Avatar’s SFX

Now that's just fancy photography.
Nope, no SGI here. Instead, we have HP, how surprising! It turns out that a company called Weta Digital based in New Zealand did all the rendering for Avatar and King Kong (2005). Their clusters even got into the TOP500 supercomputer list. Overall, nothing overly impressive here, just tons of x86 CPUs crunching away producing 8GBs of data per day.
